South Island freeze hits -7C as icy blast grips Mackenzie Country

“Now it’s turned quite decisively colder as the winds come more southerly. And they’ve been pretty consistently southerly for a few days now and that’s just brought the temperatures right down.

“Then you also get some, some clear overnight skies, and the ground can just drop in temperature quite rapidly,” the spokesperson said.

Conditions are expected to be similar tomorrow.
