Before the Canada trip, Jones had flown from Honiara – where it was 36C in the shade – to Australia before flying on to Vancouver, where he was stranded overnight for seven hours in “very average” facilities before flying to Toronto.
In Toronto, he headed directly to the mining conference, “into meeting after meeting, media after meeting, and a host of investment presentations around the city of Toronto”, he told Bridge.
Stuff has reported that Jones was staying at the InterContinental Hotel in Toronto, 200m from the convention centre where the conference took place, with an indoor walking bridge connecting the two buildings.
Bridge repeatedly asked if Jones had been aware of his hotel’s proximity to the conference venue, but Jones did not directly address the issue, referring to “falsehoods designed to try and undermine the matua” – a term he often uses to refer to himself.
He said the media’s focus on the issue was “tiresome” and they were trying to malign him, “as the left-wing media sought to obstruct Trump’s rise”.
