The video has 254,000 views, 23,000 likes and hundreds of comedic comments praising the driver’s “mad” skills.
“That’s actually really impressive, I would’ve been stressing, crying,” one wrote.
“I can hardly reverse out my driveway,” another joked.
Another claimed the backwards stunt qualified the motorist as the “world’s best backwards driver”.
An AA spokesperson told the Herald that, as per the New Zealand Road Code, reversing was only allowed when it was safe and necessary.
Generally, it is suitable for short manoeuvres such as reversing out of a driveway or into a car park.
“It is risky and illegal to travel in reverse for a long distance along public roads, and can be considered careless or dangerous driving,” the spokesperson said.
Police and the video poster have been approached for comment.
