Elderly woman hit by vehicle while crossing Auckland’s Mt Wellington Highway

A spokesperson for police said the Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area, as delays are expected, and diversions have been put in place through Roslyn Rd for southbound vehicles.

There are four police cars, one ambulance, one operations manager and one rapid response vehicle in attendance.

The woman was still being assessed by paramedics on the scene, a Hato Hone St John spokesperson said.

One witness who was shopping across the road told the Herald an elderly woman was hit as she was crossing the road.

The witness said the woman has been knocked unconscious and has a “big gash” to her head, but because of earlier movement she “definitely isn’t dead”.

One local told the Herald he has known the woman for “quite a while” and said she is a “lovely, sweet lady” in her 90s.

He said she attends community hub events at the centre he works at, right across the road from where the accident took place.

He and other community members had been trying to get in contact with her family. He said she lived alone.

According to Auckland Transport (AT), Mt Wellington Highway is one of Auckland’s busiest arterial roads, recording around 20,000 vehicle movements a day.
