Emergency services could be seen on the runway of the airport, with both fire and ambulance crews responding.
According to flight code database Squawk7700.com, the aircraft’s pilot issued a squawk code 7700 – the universal radio code to signal an in-flight general emergency to air traffic control – at about 3.10pm.

Hato Hone St John was notified of an “aviation incident” at Christchurch Airport at 3.13pm.
“We responded five ambulances, three rapid response units, and one manager. Our crews were not required,” St John said.
