The iPhone 18 Pro and Max models with 256GB and 512GB TLC storage may be faster than the 1TB or 2TB variants. In order to save money, the 1TB variants will partially get QLC storage, while the 2TB iPhone 18 Pro will only have QLC, according to insider @Reptalicant.
Triple-level cell (TLC) NAND stores three bits of data per cell and typically provides faster and more stable data writes while offering higher endurance. Quad-level cell (QLC) NAND is slower but cheaper. The new reports align with previous reports that Apple will be cutting back on components to reduce price increases.
“but the higher capacity parts get cost cutted – 1TB : Now use BC8Q-1T as the main supplied drive, which is a QLC NAND from SKHynix. But Apple also have Samsung 3DV8 1TB TLC as a rare alternative. Imagine buying an iPhone 18 Pro/Max 1TB and getting a slower drive, oh god.
“[The model with] 2 will now use the BC8Q-2T, a 2TB QLC drive from SK Hynix. This thing is clearly designed for enterprise only, random 4K performance will be terrible. Let me remind you, the iPhone 17Prm at 2TB is TLC. It seems Apple has to cut costs, even in their premium product,” writes @Reptalicant.
Recall that Tim Cook recently said that the price of the iPhone will increase due to shortages and rising component prices. However, the company is trying to minimize the increase in user costs: the iPhone 17 avoided a price increase during the last price increase for Apple devices, and further increases are likely to be insignificant.
“I hope Android manufacturers don’t copy this,” the insider wrote.
