Huawei has been using the “three-punch-hole” screen design in its top Mate smartphones for the past couple of years, but the Mate 90 series may adopt changes in this segment. A new input suggests that the company could optimize the tri-hole display look for the upcoming flagship.
SmartPikachu reported that Huawei will use dual-layer OLED screens for the Mate 90 series. Whether the screen tech will remain exclusive to the high-end models or debut as a standard solution for all variants is unclear at present.
Adding more, the tipster said the company will optimize the three punch hole design for the Huawei Mate 90 series this year. The OEM may increase or reduce the size of the three holes attached to the top of the screen for a clearer viewing experience.

The tech maker introduced the three-punch-hole design with the Mate 60 Pro in 2023. Unlike many phones with a pill-like layout or a single hole cutout at the top, the new look features a unique three-hole cutout, housing the selfie lens and 3D ToF.
The first hole is for the standard front-facing selfie snapper. Meanwhile, the second and third holes contain advanced Time-of-Flight sensors for a highly secure 3D biometric unlocking mechanism, just like Apple iPhones.
Looks like Huawei may upgrade this segment with the upcoming Mate 90 series. The company brought the three-punch-hole design to all Mate devices, including the vanilla version, last year. It may follow the same rule this time but with some changes.
Further details reveal that Huawei is testing a new thermal management setup for the Mate 90 series. It may use liquid thermal interface materials that can directly elevate the Kirin chip’s performance.
