New Zealand is not arriving as a first mover. India has already concluded comprehensive trade agreements with the UK, the UAE, Australia and the EFTA bloc.
Those countries already enjoy preferential access into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. New Zealand is joining a crowded field, offering high-quality food, trusted standards and a clean, green reputation.
If this is simply a contest of tariff schedules, New Zealand is a small player arriving late.
Yet one advantage cannot be negotiated into anyone else’s agreement because it is not a concession — it is a relationship.
India has spent two decades building AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) into a globally recognised economic and regulatory system, treating traditional knowledge as an industry in its own right.
New Zealand has something remarkably similar.
Mātauranga Māori and rongoā Māori represent a living Indigenous knowledge system, increasingly supported by Māori enterprises investing in natural products, biodiscovery, wellness and innovation. That overlap is genuine. India already understands its value because it has spent years building similar capability at home.
That is where New Zealand’s real competitive advantage lies.
The UK, Australia and the UAE can match our logistics, product quality and, in some cases, scale. What they cannot replicate is a credible indigenous knowledge economy capable of engaging with India through mutual recognition rather than novelty.
Mānuka honey demonstrates the point. New Zealand did not succeed simply by exporting honey. It succeeded by protecting provenance, investing in science and creating a premium category that others struggled to imitate. The India FTA now provides a platform to expand that success into broader natural health and wellness sectors.
AYUSH is a much larger opportunity, rewarding exactly the same qualities: trusted provenance, robust science, credible regulation and products grounded in authentic cultural knowledge.
None of this suggests the FTA is a finished product.
If anything, New Zealand’s experience with China offers an important lesson. The greatest gains came not because the agreement was perfect, but because businesses treated it as a platform rather than an endpoint. They invested, innovated and built relationships over time.
The same principle applies to India.
Modi’s visit will generate headlines, symbolism and renewed political attention. The real measure of success will come afterwards: whether New Zealand’s wellness, natural products, education and tourism sectors arrive in India with propositions that go well beyond tariff preferences, and whether government and industry are prepared to invest in long-term partnerships.
The agreement provides improved access across much of New Zealand’s export economy, while creating a framework for deeper commercial engagement between the two countries.
That should be seen as the starting point, not the destination.
The real opportunity has never been whether the agreement delivered “enough” on day one.
It is whether New Zealand is prepared to build where few others can compete: at the intersection of AYUSH and mātauranga Māori, where traditional knowledge meets modern industry.
That advantage already exists.
As Prime Minister Modi’s aircraft lands in Auckland, the only remaining question is whether New Zealand is prepared to use it.
