It’s been 20 years since Guillermo del Toro’s Academy Award-winning dark fantasy masterpiece, Pan’s Labyrinth, celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Now, Collider is proud to announce that our own Steven Weintraub will be moderating an exclusive panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where special guests del Toro, Oscar winning cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, Ivana Baquero (The Shannara Chronicles), and Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) will join us on stage for an in-depth conversation about the making of this iconic film, and how it’s continued to resonate with fans all these years later.
Pan’s Labyrinth is a dark fairy tale that takes place in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, in the summer of 1944. Ofelia, played by a young Baquero, is a little girl who’s sent with her pregnant mother (Ariadna Gil) to live in the countryside with her brutal stepfather, the Spanish army’s ruthless Captain Vidal (Sergi López), who’s been assigned to wipe out the remaining rebels camped in the forest. Here, Ofelia discovers a hidden labyrinth that leads to an enchanted world, where an ageless faun (Jones) tells Ofelia that she is actually a princess from this mystical world. The faun explains that to reclaim her rightful place, Ofelia will have to complete three tasks if she wishes to reunite with her true father, the King of the Underworld (Federico Luppi), ever again. As her mother’s failing health threatens the life of her unborn child, Ofelia undertakes a quest to complete the Faun’s tasks.

20 Years Later, Return to the Enchanted World of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’
Two decades ago, Pan’s Labyrinth left audiences and critics alike in awe. del Toro’s cinematic approach to the fallout of the Spanish Civil War through the eyes of 10-year-old Ofelia redefined fairy tales on screen with the enchanted whimsy we’ve come to know the filmmaker for best. It blends the very best of the writer-director’s originality, creature work, and fantastic vision into a timeless tale that’s still hailed as one of his most renowned works.
Pan’s Labyrinth was nominated for six categories at the 79th Academy Awards, taking home three wins — Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Art Direction, and Best Achievement in Makeup. In total, the film has earned 106 wins from 115 nominations. It also received critical acclaim, including top film of 2006 by the legendary Roger Ebert, and is Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% Tomatometer score.
Pan’s Labyrinth is heading back to theaters this October for its 20th anniversary — hitting screens on October 9, 2026, in stunning 4K, and for the first time ever, in 3D and premium HDR by Barco, with the 4K and 3D being overseen by del Toro himself. But before that happens, you’ve got a once-in-a-lifetime chance to revisit the magic with the people who actually made it.
This year at SDCC — one of the biggest entertainment cons on the planet — we’re hosting a special panel with del Toro, Navarro, Baquero, and Jones, who’ll be diving into how the film came together, swapping stories from set, and debuting newly recorded footage you can’t see anywhere else.
