NCBI general manager Pip Thompson said the idea was inspired by the nostalgia of roller discos to create a new school holiday experience for today’s families.
“Roller skating is one of those activities that instantly brings back memories for so many people.
“We wanted to create something that parents could genuinely enjoy alongside their kids. It’s affordable, it’s indoors, and it’s a great excuse to spend time together during the school holidays.”
With entry from just $5, the pop-up rink has been designed to be accessible for families, while also encouraging visitors to make a day of it by exploring Napier’s cafes, eateries and retailers before or after their skate session.
Bay Skate manager Kyle Hamilton said the partnership was a natural fit, bringing skating into the heart of the city while creating a fun, weather-proof experience for the community.
“At Bay Skate, our goal is simple: ‘keeping the city rolling’, that’s why we’re so excited to partner with NCBI to bring this roller disco to the heart of the city.”
Hamilton said skating was something everyone could enjoy, regardless of age or experience, and it was all about having fun together as a community.
“The added bonus is that it’s one of the few events where we don’t have to spend the week watching the weather forecast and hoping for the best.”
The event will feature daily morning and afternoon sessions, with skate hire available for those who don’t have their own.
