“On 19 May 2026, MPI was notified about concerns for the wellbeing of horses at a North Auckland Kumeū property,” Taylor said.
“MPI animal welfare inspectors carried out inspections of horses across two properties on 21 May with the help of the SPCA and an equine veterinarian.
“MPI’s investigation remains ongoing and consideration is being given to whether further enforcement action is appropriate.”
New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) general manager for welfare and industry capability Sam Fursdon said the organisation was aware of the concerns raised regarding the incident and acknowledged the seriousness of the matter.
“Any suggestion of inappropriate treatment or neglect of a horse is deeply concerning and something the industry takes very seriously,” Fursdon said.
“As the horse involved had formally retired from racing and was no longer in the care of a licensed or otherwise accountable person under the Rules of Racing, the matter fell outside the Racing Integrity Board’s jurisdiction and has been referred to the appropriate authorities.”
Fursdon also said NZTR had contributed towards the welfare of the three horses since they were surrendered.
“NZTR has provided emergency veterinary assistance for three thoroughbreds connected with this case and is grateful to the veterinarians, welfare organisations and individuals who have helped care for the affected horses.”
He said cases like this reinforce the importance of remaining connected with horses once they leave racing and NZTR hopes to improve traceability and strengthen connections with the retired thoroughbreds and owners to help address welfare concerns earlier.
“Horse welfare remains a fundamental priority for NZTR, and we will continue to work with the relevant authorities and industry partners to support the best possible outcomes for thoroughbreds throughout and beyond their racing careers.”
Meanwhile, Rodney Animal Rescue founder Alice Hayward updated the Herald on the condition of the horses and said all three are gaining weight steadily with the correct nutrition plan and are improving each week.
