According to New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), the crash closed the tunnel in both directions as contractors and emergency services rushed to the scene.
NZTA said SH1 remained closed in an update at 2.40pm, with contractors still on-site clearing debris.

Tow trucks were heading to the incident, with the agency noting the vehicles were needing to be towed off the road.
“Continue to avoid the area or use an alternative route,” NZTA wrote on social media.
