Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s security presence on their wedding day came with a hefty price tag.
The Grammy winner and the Kansas City Chiefs star, both 36, married on July 3 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. To protect the high-profile couple on their big day, the streets surrounding the venue were closed, and onlookers noted heavy security and a large NYPD presence.
At a press conference on Friday, July 10, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was asked, “Could you also confirm that Taylor Swift will be paying the city back any and all money for police overtime, and if so, how much and to whom?”
In response, Mamdani said, “Taylor Swift has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event,” according to C-SPAN. “And that was a permit that was finalized, I think, just [in] the days before the event itself.”
Mamdani previously advised New Yorkers to “stay cool” during the couple’s wedding weekend, which wound up taking place in the midst of a heatwave with record-setting temperatures in the triple digits.
“If you happen to be getting married at Madison Square Garden, you will be staying inside and you will be staying cool,” he said at a press conference on June 30. “And I think it’s a good example to set for the city at large.”
The morning after the wedding, onlookers noted that the large NYPD presence that had been stationed nearby was largely gone, though private security remained stationed around the venue’s loading dock.
Celebrity event designer Edward Perotti — who did not work on the event — previously estimated to PEOPLE that it typically costs about $1 million a day to rent out a stadium like Madison Square Garden, putting the overall wedding budget anywhere from $35 million to $50 million.

“Most stadiums, they’re union houses; you also have to navigate the union, the workers, and you have to pay them,” he explained. “There’s a snowball effect with it that just kind of automatically comes with it that most people don’t think.”
Still, he did not doubt that all would be pulled off without a hitch.
“It is a Herculean effort to pull off what they’re pulling off in that garden,” he said.
Days after the star-studded ceremony, a source told PEOPLE that Swift was seen in Montana with brother-in-law Jason Kelce and his wife Kylie Kelce.
The “Opalite” singer and Kelce are expected to attend NFL star JuJu Smith-Schuster‘s wedding in California over the weekend, and Kelce will head to Chiefs training camp on July 28.
“They’re really excited to enjoy a few weeks of newlywed life before football season gets going again,” an insider close to the couple recently told PEOPLE.
