Amazon has found a new action thriller streaming smash hit, as the platform’s new “ John Wick meets Jason Bourne” genre effort officially becomes one of the most-watched movies on the streamer. The original Amazon action outing has been likened to both the slick escapades of Baba Yaga and the intense espionage of Bourne, with a little Jason Statham-style no-nonsense explosiveness sprinkled over the top for good measure, as it tracks a former assassin called back into action to uncover a major conspiracy involving an elite team of spies.

Released back in March, Agent Zeta has come from nowhere to find huge success on 
Prime Video. Dominating streaming both globally and in the United States over the last few months, the action thriller continues this victory after being officially named one of the biggest releases on the popular platform in recent months.
Directed by Dani de la Torre, Agent Zeta stars Mario Casas (Bird Box: Barcelona) as the titular resurrected special agent, and picks up after five former Spanish spies are murdered simultaneously in different embassies around the world. The CNI discovers that they were all involved in the secret “Operation Swamp” in Colombia 35 years ago, in which a sixth agent was involved — the only one to escape the assassins. Enter Zeta, the best operative in the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia, aka the National Intelligence Centre (CNI), who soon finds out the most hidden and powerful secret of all is the involvement of a seventh agent in the mission, a shadowy spy nobody knew about.
Starring Luis Zahera (Cell 211), Mariela Garriga (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), and Christian Tappan (Primate), alongside Casas, Agent Zeta is now one of the most-watched original films from Amazon Studios on Prime Video alongside the likes of fellow action thriller Vengeance, the Culpa franchise, the hit legal drama System, and the action horror outing Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End.

Though it doesn’t seem to matter much when it comes to the appeal of Agent Zeta, the action flick has struggled with critics since release. Likened to Amazon’s other action hits such as Jack Ryan, Citadel, and The Terminal List, Agent Zeta has been praised for all the shootouts and explosions on display, but the consensus seems to be that the movie could have been so much more. “There are solidly executed action sequences, and a clear ambition to launch a Latin-flavored spy franchise,” said one reaction, with another adding, “Prime Video seems to be testing whether Casas can become an Ibero-American Bond or Jack Ryan—and whether this could be the start of something bigger.”
Agent Zeta has also been compared unfavorably to two action hero Jasons, Bourne and Statham, with this reaction saying, “De la Torre’s film seems to aim for something like the Bourne saga, yet barely reaches the level of a Jason Statham production.” Which, frankly, is hardly an insult. Further reactions from audiences have hailed Agent Zeta as an “Awesome movie,” with hopes for a sequel, and praised the amount of action on display that once again demonstrates how “John Wick has changed the game.”
