The VFX team also produced a de-aged depiction of Will Byers (played by Noah Schnapp) for the season’s opening sequence, along with the dangerous creatures that appear throughout the show.

“I’m delighted for all the amazing Wētā FX Stranger Things team to be recognised by the Television Academy,” Hill said in a statement.
“So much talent, dedication and love was poured into this epic final season.”
Hill said bringing Wētā FX on to the project with “friends” such as Netflix, the Duffer Brothers, Betsy Paterson and Michael Maher “was an honour” for their crew.
“Congratulations and thank you!” he said.
Head of VFX Matt Aitken extended his gratitude to the crew that worked on the highly-anticipated final season.
“We are so proud of our entire Stranger Things team for this well-deserved recognition”, Aitken said.
“It was an honour to have helped conclude such an iconic series. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
Wētā FX’s Wellington-based team are no strangers to international recognition, having regularly been nominated in the Emmy Awards category while securing the coveted industry award four times in the past.
In 2025, Wētā FX received two nominations under the same category for its work on the second seasons of The Last of Us and House of the Dragon.
The year before, the company secured the winning title for Netflix’s 2024 thriller series Ripley.
Wētā FX also won Outstanding Special Visual Effects for the first season of The Last of Us in 2023, while being bestowed the same award in 2018 and 2019 for its work on Game of Thrones’ seventh and eighth seasons.
This year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on September 6 and 7, with the Primetime Emmy Awards taking place the following week.
