Only Murders in the Building castmates Meryl Streep and Martin Short stepped out together to watch 1536 in London’s West End on Friday, July 10 — and spent some time backstage with the actors who brought the play to life — according to a post from star Tanya Reynolds.
On Saturday, July 11, Reynolds — best known for her roles in Sex Education and the 2020 adaptation of Emma — shared an Instagram post documenting the actors’ visit with herself and the rest of the 1536 cast the previous night.
In the first photo, Streep, 77, and Short, 76, are sandwiched between cast members. In the second, Streep appears to be taking a knee on the set of the historical drama, with both Short and another cast member placing a hand on her back.

“The Queen and King came to see us last night. The Queen got on her knees and bowed to us and we’ve lost our minds,” Reynolds, 34, wrote alongside the photos. She also jokingly added the hashtag, “#Merylgetup.”
Reynolds shared one additional snapshot, which shows the Only Murders in the Building duo flanked by even more members of the West End play’s cast and crew.
The Emma actress also reposted one of the group photos featuring Short and Streep on Instagram Stories. “Big day,” she wrote alongside the snap and added “Heroes” by David Bowie in an apparent nod to the veteran actors.
1536 is a Tudor England-set drama written by Ava Pickett and directed by Lyndsey Turner, also starring Liv Hill and Siena Kelly. A synopsis for the play reads, “Three women hurry to their childhood meeting place, thirsty for gossip from London. Word spreads of a clash between King Henry VIII and his Queen, Anne Boleyn. And closer to home, another rumour begins to catch fire.”

“As these women begin to see echoes of the royal drama in their own rural lives and a rise in violence spreads throughout the land, the actions of a queen imprisoned in a tower threaten to cost them everything,” the synopsis concludes.

Streep and Short’s night out at the West End hit comes after the Mamma Mia! actress teased a return to the stage — and hinted that she would like to do so with Short.
When asked if she plans to return to Broadway on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live in April, Streep — who was involved in several Broadway productions between 1975 and 1977 — didn’t hesitate.

“Oh, I would love to do so,” she said alongside her The Devil Wears Prada 2 costars. “I was talking with Marty Short about that.”
“We were thinking that it would be fun to do something together,” she added at the time.
