We’re getting some more reaction to what we know about the PM’s speech he’ll deliver today on artificial intelligence.
Anthony Albanese will announce an Office of AI within his department to oversee the design of national standards for AI.
Speaking to Sky News, Assistant Minister Julian Hill says the office will aim to preserve Australian values and decision-making in AI.
He says the office will bring together the standards created and work already done in the AI space.
“We want to make sure that we preserve those norms and that we don’t have algorithms, in my view, getting in the way and disrupting those things which, as a society, we’ve said, ‘They’re Australian values, that’s how we do things,'” Hill says.
“Algorithms and AI may be able to help with some of that but we’ve got to do it in a way that preserves people’s legal rights and norms in society.”
But Liberal frontbencher Aaron Violi says it’s too late and the office should have been created three years ago. He says the speech so far has no details or plan.
“The reality is the prime minister has failed to lead. Decisions have already been made and are being made today,” he says.
