“The show was fully booked. So we thought, ‘We’re going to have to bump somebody.’”
“Word came back from Taylor: no one must be bumped. And that was a good show to be on because everyone ended up in the Opalite music video. Everyone!”
Everyone on the show that night made it into the video, including musician Lewis Capaldi, actors Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Domhnall joked about being in one of Swift’s music videos, which got her thinking, Swift wrote on an Instagram post.
“When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light-hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos,” she recalled. “I was instantly struck with an idea.
“And so a week later, he received an email script I’d written for the Opalite video, where he was playing the starring role.
“I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on the Graham Norton show that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too.”
Opalite – also the name of Swift’s track on The Life of a Showgirl – is a man-made glass designed to mimic natural opal.
“Opalite is a song about forgiving yourself for having gone through something that didn’t pan out the way you wanted it to,” Swift said in an interview with Hits Radio.
“It’s giving yourself permission to not have it all figured out or not marry the first person you ever dated.”
