Sonderegger said accurate sizing is critical because ICLs are positioned in the ciliary sulcus behind the iris, an area that cannot be reliably assessed using conventional imaging alone. “Rather than relying solely on historical sizing formulas, the system provides personalised recommendations based on a patient’s anatomy, helping surgeons plan procedures with greater confidence.”
He said retaining the natural lens may also provide advantages for patients who later require cataract surgery.
While ICL technology has been available in New Zealand for nearly 25 years, EVO Viva is the first such lens specifically designed to address presbyopia. The lens has been available in Australia for approximately 18 months and is now being introduced to the New Zealand market.
