Throughout the 21st century, movie theaters have put in place countless new formats and amenities to help enhance the movie-going experience on the big screen. One of the biggest revolutions came when James Cameron set a new standard for 3D with the release of 2009’s Avatar, which still ranks as the highest-grossing movie in history. In the years since, movies like Gravity (2013), Life of Pi (2012), Pacific Rim (2013), the live-action and animated How to Train Your Dragon movies (2010 and 2025), and more have only added to that experience and enhanced it over the years.

Along with other premium formats like IMAX 70mm and 4DX, SCREENX has become one of the leaders in high-level movie-viewing experiences. This company delivers a movie screen that expands further to the side than normal theaters, giving viewers a full 270-degree view of the scenery that surrounds the audience more fully. Movies like The Mandalorian and Grogu, Toy Story 5, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have all enjoyed massive success on SCREENX this year, with the Mario sequel giving the company its biggest opening weekend ever at $2.7 million. Now, the format is back for what should be one of the biggest new movies of the summer.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to be released in the SCREENX format in select theaters. Specifically, the movie will be released under the company’s new “Shot for SCREENX” initiative, marking the first time CJ 4DPLEX has partnered with the creative team on a Spider-Man film from production through theatrical release. The movie will even include key sequences that were specifically designed for the 270-degree panoramic presentation, and the press release for the news reported that advanced ticket sales delivered the highest 24-hour presale in SCREENX history.

SCREENX released a teaser for its presentation of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in Jun. 2026, teasing some of what to expect on this special screen for Tom Holland’s fourth solo movie. Using a different format than IMAX and 4DX, it still has work to do to become one of the more recognizable experiences, but Sony Pictures dedicating parts of Spider-Man: Brand New Day to utilizing its capabilities should help push it further into the forefront.

Notably, Brand New Day is also using much more practical imagery in its footage than what fans saw in Jon Watts’ original “Home” trilogy, with Destin Daniel Cretton taking over as the director. That footage should only be enhanced further by the SCREENX formar, giving viewers the most immersive experience with a Spider-Man movie that has ever been seen.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will debut in theaters on Jul. 31, 2026.
