The interest wasn’t one-sided, because her husband was also immediately open to the idea of adoption, said Brown. “I would say Jake was kind of in from the jump. Maybe that’s why I married him. We were just so aligned. No explanation needed,” she said. “It was kind of great to be able to just know that we wanted to start a family still rooted in love, but through adoption.”

The actor then mentioned a “rightfully” long and thorough process involved in taking on a child, and how joy overwhelmed her and Bongiovi the moment they received the call telling them they’d been matched with a little girl. “Getting the call, I mean, I will never forget it,” she told Shetty. “It was the most surreal feeling and yet we both knew in that moment, like, that was…that we had found each other. Like, oh my goodness, this is our girl, 100%, no doubt.”

Recalling that moment, Brown remembered a conversation she had with another adoptive mother. “And she told us, ‘There are two ways to have a baby, one through your stomach and one through your heart, and my girl was through my heart,” she said.

Brown and Bongiovi have a self-imposed rule of not speaking in detail about their daughter, whose name they have decided not to reveal for privacy reasons. In an interview with British Vogue, the actor explained the reasons behind this choice: “It’s not my place to purposefully put her in the spotlight unwillingly. If she chooses to share her personality one day with the world, like I did when I was young, that’s something we’d support,” says Brown. “But right now, as she’s so little.” She added, “As her parents, it’s our job to protect her from that.”
