GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — One of the suspects in the murder of a Traverse City parking services employee was back in court Friday.
Hunter Vanderwall, 19, is charged in the shooting death of Lawrence Boyd in November 2025.
A hearing was held in 86th District Court to determine if Vanderwall is competent to stand trial.

Dr. Daniel Sorkin, who did Vanderwall’s mental health exam, testified that Vanderwall was competent to stand trial.
But during cross examination, defense attorney Jesse Williams brought up a 2024 clinical and neuropsychological evaluation done on Vanderwall, that Dr. Sorkin said he wasn’t aware of.
Dr. Sorkin said there is a possibly this new information could change his opinion on competency.
The judge ordered Williams to send the 2024 evaluation to Dr. Sorkin and scheduled a new competency hearing for August 7.
Vanderwall is charged with:
Homicide – Felony MurderPolice Officer – Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing Breaking & Entering – Vehicle to steal property
Eugene Thompson, 17, is also charged in the murder of Boyd.
Thompson’s case was bound over to 13th Circuit Court March 2026.

Homicide – Murder – 1st Degree – Premeditated Homicide – Attempted MurderWeapons – Firearms Weapons – Carrying ConcealedPolice Officer – Assault/Resist/Obstructing Weapons – Felony Firearm Breaking & Entering – Vehicle to steal property
Thompson has a final conference hearing August 28 and a trial date set for January 5.
