BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Buncombe County Parks and Recreation is offering a colorful new opportunity this summer for beginning artists – a guided painting session called Painting in the Park.

For Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Program Assistant and session teacher Caitlyn Fogarty, it’s all about giving people a way to express themselves.
“Sometimes it’s hard to just sit down and paint in your house,” Fogarty said.

The Painting in the Park series guides beginners on painting basics and how to use colors together.
“We’ll kind of all paint the same thing, but I definitely encourage people to kind of make it their own” Fogarty said.
Fogarty says all are welcome, regardless of skill level.
“(it’s a) very low stakes environment, no judgment. Just kind of get you in a place where you can clear your head, and have fun,” Fogarty said.
For some, this is the artistic outlet they didn’t know they needed.

“I am not an artist, and guided painting was appealing,” Kendra Clopton said.
Clopton brought her granddaughter along, too.
“I wanted to learn some techniques to help me compete with my 8-year-old granddaughter over here,” Clopton said.
And it imparts some good life lessons.
“It’s a learning experience, and it’s a great benefit for her to understand that it’s all in the eye of the beholder,” Clopton said.
Fogarty says that in the end, it’s not about making the perfect painting. It’s about being yourself.
“It just gives them that opportunity to kind of be free,” Fogarty said.
The sessions are held each Thursday from now through August, and the cost is $10. More information is available at BuncombeNC.gov.
