Kiwi singer Lorde calls out Spotify over ‘inaccurate’ new AI feature

That choreographed sequence actually occurs during another Virgin track GRWM.

“Not only is this inaccurate (not the song I did that in) but reducing a song to an AI generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation imo [in my opinion],” Lorde said.

“At least make it possible for artists to opt out please.”

Spotify announced the “About the Song” feature in February, saying it would “explore the meaning behind the music you’re hearing” using summaries from third-party sources.

Spotify has reportedly since removed the inaccurate text from the song, though a different version of the feature still appears alongside the track.

“We built ‘About the Song’ because fans want to dig into the stories behind the music,” Spotify said in a statement.

“It’s still in beta. The info comes from articles across the internet, and when something’s off, we move fast to fix it, like we did here. Getting it right matters to us.”

This isn’t the first time Lorde has spoken out against AI and technology, telling her fans during a performance at Madrid’s Mad Cool festival this month that she wasn’t a fan of Meta’s AI glasses.

“Increasingly, in our world, it gets harder and harder to know what is real,” she said on stage.

“Can I just say, for the record, f*** the glasses. Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy.”

It comes less than a year after Spotify claimed it was strengthening AI protections for artists, songwriters and producers.

The streaming platform said in September that it had removed 75 million “spammy tracks” over the past 12 months.

“The future of the music industry is being written, and we believe that aggressively protecting against the worst parts of Gen AI is essential to enabling its potential for artists and producers,” it said at the time.

“We envision a future where artists and producers are in control of how or if they incorporate AI into their creative processes.”
