Huawei Mate 90 RS Ultimate could surprise everyone with a years-old camera look. The company is seemingly planning to bring back some previous design approaches to its devices, and a Mate 20-like imaging module might be part of this groundwork.

Weibo tipster @FixedFocus recently revealed that the future flagship phones by Huawei and Honor could showcase a square camera bump instead of a round one.

The company has been using octagonal-shaped imaging setups for the Mate RS Ultimate Editions for several years. Even before launching its own luxury phone brand – “Ultimate Design”, the OEM was implementing an octagon-like lens bump on RSR models.

Meanwhile, other Mate variants, like the vanilla version and Pro/Pro+ handsets, had a circular camera design with slight changes in the module’s thickness.

But Huawei is reportedly planning to return to the square camera design – the one used for the Mate 20 series in 2018. Unlike the years-old phone with a small four-pointed matrix, the new square camera could appear bigger and wider.

A square-based camera module not only aligns well with aesthetics but also eases the placement of complex multi-camera systems. It will further enhance the overall appearance of the flagship smartphone, making it different and more attractive.

Not only Huawei, but Honor is also in the news for adopting a similar process for the upcoming top-end models. However, whether this change will be visible with the Magic 9 series is uncertain for the moment.

Huawei hasn’t confirmed this news yet. But based on its idea of bringing back the gradient color scheme for the Pura 90 series, it seems the OEM may turn this leak into reality.
