While Stewart Island may see a couple of showers, much of the central South Island, particularly the West Coast, is shaping up for some of the country’s best weather.
“They’re looking to have quite a fine day,” Marshall said.
The top of the South Island will start Monday with some morning cloud, while a few showers may linger around Buller, she said.
However, Marshall said conditions are expected to improve through the day, with the cloud clearing to leave a fine afternoon for most of the region.
Coastal areas are likely to see the most cloud and showers as a slow-moving trough tracks north, while inland areas should become increasingly settled as high pressure builds.
Drivers should allow extra time for the morning commute, particularly in areas affected by rain, low cloud or frosty conditions, Marshall said.
Much of New Zealand would see settled weather through the first half of the week, with isolated showers in the North Island and rain in the western and southern South Island, she said.
Conditions were expected to become wetter later in the week, with rain spreading across both islands and heavy falls possible in western areas by Friday.
