From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The hosts of The View have torn into Donald Trump over his appearance at Sunday’s World Cup final.

Trump was on hand to help present medals and trophies at the conclusion of the match, which saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in extra time at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. He then forced his way into the team’s winning photo, much to the chagrin of viewers at home.

During Monday’s broadcast, the women of The View launched right into dissecting Trump’s appearance.

“I will say it did seem like some people got a very chilly — like a ‘boo’ chilly reception from the crowd,” Whoopi Goldberg said. While showing viewers a photo of Trump crashing the Spain team photo, Goldberg added: “Can I just point out he looks like somebody inserted his picture?”

Ana Navarro interjected: “He inserted himself. But I mean, it’s like, I don’t know how this guy thinks that he’s not gonna get booed in a stadium that’s full of Latin Americans and Spaniards.”

She continued, thinking back to the Argentina team walking across the field to accept their medals from Trump and Fifa president Gianni Infantino: “If these guys weren’t on this field, if they were standing in front of a Home Depot, Trump’s eyes would be racially profiling them.”

Navarro then launched into a laundry list of statements Trump has made in recent months about Spain, including calling them “bad people.” She also pointed out that in March, Trump said: “Spain is a loser.”

She then looked into the camera and smiled: “Oh no they’re not.”

When approached for comment, White House spokesman Davis Ingle told The Independent: “Ana Navarro is an extremely unlikeable, talentless hack with a poorly rated TV show who clearly suffers from a severe and incurable disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome. I lose braincells every time I have the displeasure of hearing her speak.”

For most of Sunday’s match, Trump could be seen behind bullet-proof glass, with First Lady Melania Trump and Barron Trump also sitting alongside him for the game.

Later on, Trump became part of the Fifa ceremony — as he did last year when Chelsea won the Fifa Club World Cup in the same stadium after victory over Paris Saint-Germain — joining Reece James at the heart of the celebrations to lift the trophy.

The cringe-worthy moment prompted Infantino to scurry toward Trump in a feeble attempt to move the president from the Spain team photo. Several snaps captured the president on the outskirts of the photo before he moved away from the celebrations.

Spain triumphed 1-0 after extra time thanks to Ferran Torres’ 106th minute goal.
