Making wildly ambitious films that become equally successful hits are the first two parts of a Christopher Nolan magic trick. And if his latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, is anything like his previous hit, Oppenheimer, that Prestige-style third act come awards season will be something to behold.
Nolan and The Odyssey have been major contenders in the 2027 Oscar race since the film was first put on Universal’s calendar. But now the ecstatic reviews and mythic box-office totals are combining to turn the film into a potential Oscar juggernaut. As we noted last week, the film has a legitimate path to top Sinners’ record of 16 nominations. After the movie’s opening weekend, the top categories are mostly unchanged, but there is some movement. Here’s a look at where things stand.

In Gold Derby’s expert-only odds for Best Picture, The Odyssey is currently tied with Digger and Project Hail Mary as the most likely films to receive nominations. Already the frontrunner for director, Nolan has extended his lead in the odds over Digger’s Alejandro G. Iñárritu, with all experts expecting him to take one of the five slots.

Odysseus himself, Matt Damon, has made big gains with experts. The three-time Oscar nominee has jumped 19 percentage points, making him the second-most-likely nominee after Tom Cruise for Digger. The rest of the predicting community is slightly cooler on Damon’s chances, though, placing him at around 58 percent with a seven point increase.
Expect that number to climb as The Odyssey continues to leg it out at the box office, though. The most radical aspects of Nolan’s take on the material stem directly from Odysseus, and add to his complexity and interiority as a character — a charge Damon takes on heroically.

Two other performances are benefitting greatly from people having seen more than just the trailer. John Leguizamo‘s role as Eumaeus and two-time previous nominee Samantha Morton as Circe did not factor heavily into The Odyssey’s marketing campaign, but the actors have received the biggest bumps from the large cast in predictions from all Gold Derby members.

Morton climbed an impressive 25 percent in the expert odds, but is still sitting outside of nomination range (for now) in eighth place. The actress has received two Oscar nominations in the past; a Best Supporting Actress nod for 1999’s Sweet and Lowdown, and a Best Actress nod for 2003’s In America.
The major question in terms of Morton’s journey to the Oscars will be whether Anne Hathaway (currently ranking first with the experts) ultimately runs in lead or supporting. Her turn as Penelope is significant enough to make the argument for Best Actress and that move would open up the lane for an additional acting nomination. Until there’s official word from Universal, the part does fit the supporting bill.

Leguizamo is in a similar place, although he’s more of a presence — and an emotional foundation — throughout the movie as opposed to her memorable one-scene performance. The actor jumped 7 percentage points in the combined odds, rising from almost zero, which just goes to show how unexpected the turn is from the comedian and actor. Leguizamo has never been nominated for an Oscar, but does boast an Emmy win for Best Performance in a Variety Special for 1999’s Freak. His challenge will be to leapfrog two castmates with meatier roles: Robert Pattinson (No. 7 in the combined odds) and Tom Holland (No. 8).
Don’t get freaked out by his current placement. Leguizamo’s chances seem destined to climb as users update their picks — and The Odyssey continues to sell out Imax screenings.
