After a call was made to the car’s registered owner, it was discovered the Corolla had been stolen from Titirangi earlier in the evening.
“Motorway cameras and Eagle [helicopter] kept observations on the vehicle as it travelled across the motorway network at high speeds.
“Spikes were deployed as the vehicle left State Highway 1 near Bombay,” Matthews said.
The vehicle continued to move south, before coming to a stop on the Waikato Expressway.
The three young people inside the vehicle were taken into custody.
Matthews said the group involved in the late-night incident put everyone on the road at risk.
“This was a dangerous display of driving across Auckland’s motorways, and it’s lucky it did not result in harm to the vehicle’s occupants or innocent members of the public,” she said.
A 15-year-old boy was expected to appear in Auckland Youth Court today, charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and failing to stop.
