MOLOKAI (HawaiiNewsNow) – State officials are urging people to stay out of the water near the remains of a humpback whale along Molokai’s south shore.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources said the carcass could attract large predators and pose other public health and safety risks.
The whale died July 10 after she and her calf spent more than two months in a pocket of reef west of Kaunakakai. The calf has since left the area and has not been seen.
Tides continue to move the remains through areas commonly used by fishers and commercial tour operators. At the recommendation of Molokaʻi cultural practitioners, officials said the whale will remain where she came to rest while community members continue monitoring the area.
“We will continue working closely with Kiai Kanaloa Molokai, the community, and our county, state and federal partners to monitor the site and respond as needed if conditions change,” said Jordan Lerma with DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources.
Officials are asking people not to approach or touch any remains found in the water or along the shoreline. Warning signs may include oil slicks, pieces of blubber and a strong smell of decay.
DLNR said people should also leave any pieces of the carcass where they are found. Removing marine mammal remains is prohibited under federal law.
Tissue samples are being analyzed to help determine the whale’s cause of death.
