‘Avengers: Doomsday’: Who Is The Mysterious Latverian Witch?

With the recent release of a trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, the penultimate chapter of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, fans have eagerly begun speculating and theorising about what is to come. That speculation has only ramped up with a display for the film at the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con.

Alongside costumes for some of the film’s major players, including Thor, Mister Fantastic, and Cyclops, the display includes a costume for a masked figure simply labelled ‘Latverian Witch’. It stands out as odd displaying a miscellaneous masked character alongside the film’s leads, so naturally, fans have jumped to assume the Latverian Witch must be someone important. But who?

Fans have come up with a few ideas.

A Disguised Scarlet Witch

Of course, the mention of a witch of any kind brings to mind the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff. Initially, the first thought of many fans was that the Latverian Witch is a disguised Wanda. Such an idea is not without precedent in the comics.

Latveria is, of course, the home country of Dr. Victor Von Doom in the comics. Doom rules over Latveria, often using his royal status to avoid punishment for his criminal activities. Doom is also one of the comics’ most notable magic users. Following her villain turn in the ‘Avengers: Disasssembled’ and ‘House of M’ storylines, the Scarlet Witch goes missing for an extended period of time. She is eventually discovered in Latveria by the Young Avengers, suffering amnesia and about to marry Doom.

Doom at first claims to genuinely love Wanda, but it isn’t long before it is confirmed that he is using and manipulating her. It is even revealed that Doom set in motion the events leading to Wanda’s breakdown in ‘Avengers: Disassembled’, meaning he is somewhat responsible for both ‘Disassembled’ and ‘House of M’.

Thankfully, with the help of Billy Kaplan, aka the Young Avenger’s Wiccan and a reincarnation of one of Wanda’s lost twin sons, Wanda recovers her memory and flees Latveria with the Young Avengers.

These events play out as part of ‘Young Avengers: The Children’s Crusade’. An adaptation of this story has long been rumoured to be in development at Marvel Studios, with a potential Young Avengers team beginning to take shape across various Multiverse Saga projects, and Kamala Khan beginning to actively recruit for said team in the closing scene of The Marvels.

The Latverian Witch display has fed an existing theory that elements of ‘The Children’s Crusade’ could play a part in Doomsday, with Wanda disguised and potentially serving Doom. The Latverian Witch’s mask could provide a work-around, allowing the film to use a body double when Elizabeth Olsen was not available due to other projects or her current pregnancy, similar to how The Mandalorian projects navigate Pedro Pascal’s busy schedule.

Latverian Coven?

The initial Wanda theory was thrown up in the air by an unexpected surprise at SDCC. While the Latverian Witch costume was green initially, it was switched for an orange one overnight. On the third day of the Con, the costume was purple.

In the MCU, different colours have been assigned to different kinds of Magic: Green for Earth, Orange for Protection/Fire, Pink for Water/Potions, Yellow for Air/Divination, and Purple for Spirit, as established in the series Agatha All Along. Wanda’s Scarlet is the previously believed mythical Chaos magic, and Billy/Wiccan’s Blue, while similar to his Mother in how he wields it, has not yet been given an official designation. Interestingly, an Agatha All Along Easter Egg has appeared as part of Doomsday’s parketing already, with a piece of the series’ score featured in the film’s X-Men teaser.

With the multiple different Latverian Witch costumes having been displayed at SDCC, it appears more likely that we are dealing with a coven of Witches, rather than a single character. And, given the magic colours established in Agatha All Along, said coven includes an Earth, Protection, and Spirit witch. Wanda’s Scarlet chaos is not represented.

That does not necessarily mean Wanda is not one of the Latverian Witches.. It could be a clever trick to play with fans’ expectations and colour associations. However, that still leaves a question as to the identity of the other two. Are they characters we already know, or some we are yet to meet? The most well-known Spirit witch is Agatha Harkness, and while 616 Agatha is currently a ghost, we are dealing with the Multiverse, so could see a Variant. Some fans have suggested Clea of the Dark Dimension, who appeared briefly in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A purple colour pallette is often used for Clea in the comics.

Fans are sure to keep speculating on the identity of each Latverian Witch in the months to come. It will be a fun way to pass the time until we hopefully get real answers when Avengers: Doomsday hits theatres in December.
