The Avengers first assembled in Marvel Comics in 1963. In the original comic, the team formed to battle a villain who had been manipulated by his adopted brother. Which villain brought the original Avengers together?
AUltron
BThanos
CLoki
DKang the Conqueror
✓ Correct! In Avengers #1 (September 1963), Loki manipulated the Hulk into going on a rampage, which led Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp to band together. They defeated Loki and decided to form a permanent team — the Avengers were born.
✗ Even the Hulk couldn’t smash that answer! The correct answer is Loki. In the original 1963 comic, Loki tricked the Hulk into a rampage, which brought together Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp. Ultron came later, Thanos is a cosmic threat, and Kang is a time-traveling villain.

ADestroyed the universe
BSnapped away half of all life
CBecame ruler of Earth

✗ Even the Hulk couldn’t smash that answer! The correct answer is that Thanos snapped away half of all life in the universe. His twisted philosophy of “balance” drove him to commit universal genocide with a single snap, making it one of the most shocking moments in cinema history.

ABruce Banner
BHank Pym
CTony Stark
DVision
✓ Correct! Tony Stark created the Ultron program as a global peacekeeping AI, using technology from Loki’s scepter (which contained the Mind Stone). During San Diego Comic-Con’s Marvel Panel, which ScreenRant was in attendance for, it was revealed that Haley Atwell would be joining the team in Avengers: Doomsday. The news came as an interesting development for many who had last seen Atwell in Avengers: Endgame, when Steve Rogers went back in time to live the remainder of his life alongside Atwell’s character Peggy Carter.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan at San Diego Comic-Con, Atwell spoke about the exciting new development for both herself and her character, whom she has been portraying since Captain America: The First Avenger, released 15 years ago. Now, the actress has finally addressed her upcoming role in the highly anticipated movie that has been largely secretive:
Ash Crossan: You’ve played Peggy across multiple timelines, decades, even Captain Carter. What new side of Peggy are you very excited to explore in Doomsday?
Hayley Atwell: Without giving anything away. I think that you have a movie that’s an existential epic. The whole thing’s turned on its head. It’s not a world you really recognize, and then there are aspects of it that are familiar, but that feel very heightened and vulnerable.
And I feel like, with Peggy, she’s on the receiving end of that. She is in a very dangerous, terrifying situation. She’s hyper vigilant the whole time of the worst happening.
With the return of familiar faces, Atwell hints at what fans predict to be a movie unlike others they have seen in previous Avengers team-ups. With a whole new host of heroes and unfamiliar settings, it’s unlikely that the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will feel entirely the same, but it will allow fans to see their favorite heroes all in one room.
Ash Crossan: She’s someone everybody naturally trusts. So in this environment, what kind of role does she take on in relation to the others around her?
Hayley Atwell: In the past, Peggy was considered the adult in the room, the one with the uniform that you can trust and rely on because she’s a good person. It’s always fun to play something that feels a little bit [more] expansive than that, a little bit more nuanced, because I think that makes her also even more human and relatable.
I had no desire to go over old ground with her. I wanted something new to do. And I haven’t seen the movie, so I can’t actually say more than that, but that’s what I hope has landed.
Atwell’s hopes for a new version of Peggy don’t seem to be a major question, given that a lot of the characters will be new in a sense that each is from a different time period and multiverse, including Steve Rogers, who was originally meant to be living his happily ever-after with longtime love interest Peggy, before the events of Avengers: Doomsday which has clearly called the retired hero into action.
Avengers: Doomsday will spring into action in theaters on December 18.
