Director Guillermo del Toro is ensuring that the upcoming 3D re-release of his acclaimed film Pan’s Labyrinth remains a purely human-crafted experience. During a Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the filmmaker addressed the restoration process for the movie’s 20th anniversary.
Del Toro explicitly stated that there was absolutely no AI used in the creation of the 3D version. He emphasized his commitment to traditional restoration techniques, distancing the project from the growing trend of using artificial intelligence in film production and post-production.
“I said, ‘Absolutely no goddamn AI,’” said Del Toro to applause. “It’s much more expensive. I don’t care. The thing is, what we’re protecting is the beauty and the redeeming power of art.”
A Commitment to Traditional Craft
The decision to avoid AI reflects the director’s long-standing dedication to practical effects and artisanal filmmaking. By opting for traditional methods for the 3D conversion, the production team maintains the original visual integrity of the dark fantasy masterpiece. You can view the original film’s details on IMDb.
