Following our previous visit to Epstein Joslin + Picardy Architects, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to New York City this week to explore the work of Acheson Doyle Partners Architects.

Founded in 1985, the firm has built a portfolio spanning architectural and historic preservation projects. “We are problem solvers operating at multiple scales, and we enjoy a good challenge when it comes to working in historic preservation, partnering with cultural institutions, and designing sacred spaces,” the firm says about its approach.

The Clinton Hill Mass Timber Home saw the renovation of an 1870s carriage house in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill into a passive house-certified mass timber residence. The project includes a penthouse primary bedroom addition overlooking a neighbouring church and introduces Japan-inspired timber detailing throughout the interior. A bespoke prefabricated Douglas fir staircase incorporates a live tree at the centre of the home, while the redesign prioritizes natural materials and energy performance.

A landmark former bank in Brooklyn originally completed in 1929, One Hanson Place saw the restoration of the 63-foot-high Art Deco banking hall and the adaptation of the historic vault for retail use. The scope included sensitive modifications to the interior lobby, teller cages, and vault, with the practice securing approvals from the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission while accommodating revised tenant requirements during construction.

The renovation of the St. Ignatius Loyola Church has included exterior restoration of the Day Nursery and Loyola School, renovation of the choir loft, and the addition of an accessible lift and ramp linking the Undercroft and Sanctuary. Continuing projects include church rehabilitation, infrastructure upgrades, and accessibility and life safety improvements across the campus. The site is designated as an NYC Landmark and a National Register of Historic Places site.

The adaptive reuse of the former Jan Hus Presbyterian Church and Neighborhood House, the Church of the Epiphany project saw the conversion of the 31,600-square-foot historic property into a mixed-use facility. The project included a new sanctuary, day school, gymnasium, rooftop terrace, offices, and a commercial kitchen supporting a community meal programme. Restoration work encompassed masonry repairs, facade stabilization, and conservation of historic architectural elements, alongside the integration of new liturgical features within the renovated sanctuary.
