Responsible for house anthems How You Are and Shiver, Summit has become a regular on the international festival circuit.
Staples will make his second appearance at the festival after performing there in 2018. The Long Beach rapper is set to play with a full band after the release of his new guitar-led album Cry Baby.
Australian producer Mall Grab will also return, with local acts including Messie, Frankie Venter and Corella rounding out the wider programme.
Organisers said more artists would be announced before the event, with general ticket sales opening on August 5.
John Summit has been announced as one of the leading artists at Rhythm and Vines.
It was announced last week that this year’s festival would be the last in Gisborne, with chief executive Kevin Spillane citing the venue’s accessibility as a factor in the decision.
“We have to adapt to how the festival culture is changing by moving somewhere that’s more accessible and will allow us more capacity and the ability to scale up,” he told the Gisborne Herald.
“The cost of putting on a festival has grown, artists’ fees have grown, so it certainly is a factor. To counteract those we sometimes need to sell a few more tickets.”
Local reactions to the news have been mixed, with some sharing their concern about the hit to the regional economy.
Gisborne Chamber of Commerce president Ashley Fisher said many businesses will expect to “see a decline in economic activity over New Year now”.
