Weather forecast: Auckland set for frost and icy roads as temperatures plunge across NZ

Bellam said central Auckland can expect a minimum of 3C – about 5C below the average for this time of year – while more sheltered parts of the City of Sails in the northwest and southeast will fall to zero.

❄️A frosty Sunday morning is forecast as far north as Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Sheltered parts of the “City of Sails” are even likely to drop to 0°C, including Whenuapai Airbase.

Temperatures are set to hit the negatives slightly further south in areas like Thames, Whitianga and Hamilton, while Taupō is expected to have the lowest minimum in the country at -4C.

“Take care on the roads if you’re out in the morning if you’re travelling around in those sheltered sort of valleys and things, especially since some of them don’t get much sun this time of year,” Bellam warned, especially for those travelling to Mount Ruapehu in what looks likely to be a “great day for skiing”.

It might also be a good idea to put frost protection covers on young trees, Bellam said.

Some showers are expected tonight for Northland and the southern parts of the South Island, with rain continuing on the West Coast into tomorrow.

Bellam said the cold will hang around heading into next week, with a few isolated showers around the North Island and in the south and west of the South Island.
