Broc Feeney on track at the Perth Super440.
Payne controlled the opening stanza of the race, only for traffic to baulk the Grove Racing driver and allow Feeney to close the gap rapidly and execute a pass for top spot.
Payne tried his best, but couldn’t return serve as he battled understeer in the wake of the Triple Eight driver.
It’s the first win for Feeney since Symmons Plains, ending a seven-race drought.
It also ended Triple Eight’s podiumless run of races, which extended to seven after the Wanneroo Raceway opener.
“It’s probably just more of a belief to be honest,” he said.
“We’ve been searching a bit, the last couple of rounds have been really tough and it’s certainly not been due to a lack of effort.
“This team has been putting in so much hard work so this win is for everybody at Triple Eight Race Engineering.
“We’ve still got a fair bit of work to do. I was made to look pretty silly in that first stint, Matt disappeared into the distance.
“But it came alive in the second stint. I was able to get the move done and was able to drive away.”
Payne lamented the ill-timed lapped traffic that ultimately cost him time to Feeney.
“I would have done the same thing if I was in his position,” he said.
“It was a shame. I think we just got caught out with lapped traffic at absolutely the wrong time.
“I don’t think there was anything I could have done, if I passed that car up the inside he would have switched me back.
“What can you do? Some things don’t go your way, and then just got caught behind him for the rest of that, just understeering too much.”

From pole position, Payne got the holeshot. Alongside him, Feeney was slow away and immediately went on the defence to cover an attack from Kai Allen.
Feeney survived the first turn in second while Randle was left to fend off Allen.
Randle got all out of shape at Turn 3 and dropped two wheels off the track. The Tickford Mustang just stayed on the track at Turn 4, but lost out to Andre Heimgartner and Chaz Mostert.
Rylan Gray’s career-best qualifying effort unravelled in the opening laps. By Lap 10 he was down nine positions to 19th and looking likely to lose more.
The biggest mover in the opening stanza was Jobe Stewart who climbed four places to 15th while Will Brown made up three places to ninth.
The battle for the wooden spoon nearly ended in tears on Lap 10 when Cooper Murray and Aaron Cameron made wheel-to-wheel contact on the front straight.
The Tickford Mustangs looked like they were beginning to fade. Eighth-placed Waters lost out to Brown while Kostecki got by Randle for sixth.
Wood fired his Walkinshaw Supra down the inside of Waters on Lap 14 and looked like he propped in the corner.
Waters got the better corner exit and returned serve and gave Wood a whack for good measure as he retook the place.
Before the pit stops began, it was Payne who led Feeney, Allen, Heimgartner, Mostert, Kostecki, Brown, Randle, Waters and Wood.
Mostert was the first to blink on Lap 16 from fifth, taking four tyres and the opportunity to get clear air. De Pasquale responded a lap later with his first pit stop.
At the head of the field, Payne led Feeney to the tune of two-and-a-half seconds. Allen was right on Feeney’s rear bumper.
Allen elected to pit on Lap 21. Unsurprisingly, Feeney reacted a lap later. The Triple Eight Mustang returned to the fray ahead of the Grove Mustang.
Payne pitted on Lap 24 and returned to the race at the back of the lead lap, mired among the likes of Jackson Walls and Zach Bates.
Several drivers decided to run long, including Kostecki and Waters who both elected to pit on Lap 26.

That traffic cost Payne dearly on Lap 27 as he fell into the clutches of Feeney due to the slowing Aaron Cameron who was coming to the pit lane.
Exiting the final turn, Feeney got to the inside of Payne’s right rear corner. With an overlap, the Triple Eight Mustang cleared the Grove Mustang into Turn 1.
Once the pit stops were completed, the biggest benefactor out of it was Brown who climbed from seventh to fifth and gained seven places on where he began. Heimgartner, meanwhile, fell from fourth to seventh and down one place on where he started.
At the head of the field, Payne couldn’t muster enough to pass Feeney. All told, the Triple Eight Mustang came home one-and-a-half seconds clear in the lead.
Supercars resumes on Sunday with qualifying at 12:30pm AWST before Race 3 at 3:20pm AWST.
