A Georgian Townhouse on Bath’s Lansdown Crescent Lists for $7.3M

Bath is one of the U.K.’s most beautiful and historically significant cities, famous for its Georgian architecture and a go-to filming location for period dramas, including Bridgerton, where it stands in for Regency-era London. 

Few addresses are better known than Lansdown Crescent, a sweeping limestone terrace overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage city. Designed by architect John Palmer and completed between 1789 and 1793, it was conceived to combine country views with city living. Nearly 250 years later, the curved terrace block is considered one of England‘s finest examples of Georgian design, with open pastureland still stretching out before it.

One of the crescent’s standout homes is now on the market with Savills for 5.45 million pounds, or about $7.3 million. According to the brokerage, the current owner specializes in restoring Georgian buildings and has renovated seven townhouses in the area, including another on the crescent. She chose No. 4 for its location at the eastern end of the terrace, where it looks across Bath and the surrounding hills from the front and toward St. Stephen’s Church from the back.

The renovation focused on restoring original details rather than modernizing the house. Decorative plasterwork, fireplaces, wood floors, sash windows, and antique hardware were either restored or replaced with period-appropriate materials. According to the listing, the work uncovered a 19th-century pressing iron hidden inside a basement fireplace.

“The comprehensive and beautifully considered restoration of 4 Lansdown Crescent has created a home that not only honors but celebrates its Georgian heritage,” Matthew Pegler of Savills said in a statement. “The elegant interiors are coupled with some of the finest views Bath has to offer, and despite its wholly rural feel, the city is just a short distance down the hill.”

The roughly 6,600-square-foot home spans five floors and includes six bedrooms and four bathrooms. A lower-ground level can function as a separate apartment, while the walled garden is planted with mature white wisteria, climbing roses, and vines. A gate at the back opens directly onto the mews lane, a feature that’s uncommon among Bath’s Georgian townhouses.

The crescent has long attracted notable residents, including novelist and collector William Beckford, who bought several neighboring homes there in the early 19th century before creating the landscaped grounds leading to Beckford’s Tower, one of Bath’s best-known landmarks.
