The famous team will make its return to Supercars this year with a Great Race wildcard driven by James Moffat and Nathan Herne.
The initial plan was to lease a car from Erebus Motorsport, which is headquartered close to GRM. However, Erebus was unable to facilitate a car due to a lack of resources.
That pushed GRM into talks with Triple Eight, where the lease price of a car was high enough that the outright purchase of a car became the more attractive offer.
The outcome was GRM buying the Camaro that was raced by Craig Lowndes and Zach Bates at the Bathurst 1000 last year in Supercheap Auto colours.
Long-time GRM employee Jeff Marshall went to Triple Eight’s workshop in Brisbane last week for a handover of the new car, which has since arrived at GRM’s Melbourne workshop.
The car is presented in Red Bull Ampol Racing colours as it was last used during sponsor ride day commitments in November 2025.

However, its five race event appearances all took place in Supercheap Auto colours, run as the team’s Craig Lowndes-led wildcard.
“I must say, a lot of credit to Jamie Whincup and the team at Triple Eight, the car is absolutely immaculate,” said GRM boss Barry Rogers.
“You’d swear it was a brand new car. So thank you.
“Jamie would not get a job in my used car yard, because you never put new tyres on a car. But brand new tyres. I would have had re-treads on it if I was him.”
The last comment is somewhat ironic, given Whincup was fired by GRM after his rookie season way back in 2003.
He went on to win a record-setting seven Supercars titles with Triple Eight before stepping out of the drivers’ seat and into the managing director role.
