Johnson said the charges related to alleged child sexual abuse material.
Hogg was located in the Waipapa area and arrested last Friday.
Johnson said Hogg had lived in the Far North only in recent years, having previously lived on Waiheke Island, elsewhere in Auckland from the 1990s, and for several years in Australia.
Police are encouraging anyone with relevant information from those areas to come forward.
“I’m encouraging anyone with information or who holds any concerns or knowledge of anything untoward having occurred to come forward, or to approach an advocate who can come to police on your behalf,” Johnson said.
“You can be assured that we will treat your information in confidence and ensure the right support services are engaged to assist you moving forward.”
Hogg appeared in the Kaitāia District Court on Friday and was scheduled to reappear on August 13.
