Red Brick Center for the Arts will present “Nearness,” the final exhibition of its 2026 summer season, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 13, 110 E. Hallam St.
The exhibit brings together portrait-based paintings and photographs that explore identity, memory, relationships and how people connect with themselves and others.
“This juxtaposition of portraits invites viewers to reflect on our shared humanity, youth and the connections that shape our lives,” Executive Director of the Red Brick Center for the Arts Sarah Roy said. “We hope the work encourages moments of reflection and curiosity.”
Portraiture, which has long been used to convey identity and emotion, offers a powerful way to examine human interaction. The artists in “Nearness” invite viewers to look closely at the stories each portrait tells through faces, people and relationships.

Jack Fox, Shelly Safir Marolt and Shawna Miller’s artwork will be on display. Fox photographs the conflict between freedom and life’s demands by taking pictures of young people throughout times of transition. Marolt draws on her background in fashion design to produce vibrant painted portraits that return to themes of memory, repetition and love. Miller explores the relationship between mother and child and the comfort of close physical connection.
“Nearness” will be on view from Aug. 13 to Oct. 16.
