It’s been a good summer for movies. If you’ve already caught The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day in theaters, we’ve got some picks for home viewing. This week, we highlight some of the best new releases available on different streaming services and rental platforms.
Evil Dead Burn, directed by Sébastien Vaniček, is available to rent. The movie marks the latest entry into the Evil Dead franchise, following in the footsteps of its predecessors while doing its own thing, with a unique visual palette and plenty of fun camera flourishes. It follows a woman trying to escape a group of Deadites whose threat hit particularly close to home.
The Last House is also available on Netflix. Starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, the movie follows a family trapped inside their house by a mysterious force, faced with food shortages and the psychological toll of their strange situation.

The script could use more work, but on a technical level, the film has some exciting moments. The camera flies through the sets like a demon on the prowl. A few sequences frame the classic encounters between our final girl and the Deadites in new ways: one is shot from above, allowing the choreography to shine; another is a long take, trailing a character on the floor as they try to escape the chaos caused by the undead.

The trailer for The Last House perfectly encapsulates how something like the home, a place most of us regard as safe and comfortable, can be transformed into a horror in its own right. As shared in the movie’s press release, the home the family is trapped in was hand-built and “meticulously designed” through cross-departmental collaboration. The result is a claustrophobic, intense space where reminders of life outside haunt the family at every turn.
