My Secret Auckland: Karishma Grebneff shares her favourite spots in the city

  • August 9, 2026

Best restaurant for dinner with friends?

Hot and Spicy Pot, Dominion Rd, next question.

The place to take a visitor?

The last time I took a visitor somewhere, I took my brother to Running Grid! It’s a light-up floor game: step on the green tiles to get points and avoid the red. It’s so much fun! Take your friends and your inhaler.

Best spot to finish a night out?

I’m a 32-year-old grandma and the best spot is with my cats Loco and Punk, but when the mole emerges it’s gotta be Gogo’s Music Cafe. Vibes and feast unmatched.

Best coffee?

My favourite place to get an oat hot chocolate is The Alderman. The weekend wizards alchemise the foam into velvet. As for coffee – I prefer to make mine at home. NZ brand Riley coffee from Woolworths is the owl’s hoot!

Favourite trail for a hike?

Upper Nihotupu Dam, a smorgasbord for the vision; two different waterfalls AND a reservoir. Probably more suited to flip-flops than Te Awakauwahaia, but sneakers still recommended.

Favourite fish and chip shop?

My regular haunt is Sunny Takeaways, Bruce McLaren Rd. Crab stick and chicken salt chippies please.

Venue for a gig?

Some of my favourite shows I have seen have been at Q and Basement Theatre. Theatre is absolute magic and our artists in NZ are athletes. Recently a lot of arts organisations have had funding cuts or have lost funding all together. Art is how humans make sense out of being alive. It’s election year. Make your voice and vote count and check out what’s out there! It’ll knock your socks off.

Best spot for a bargain?

$1.99 Lotte Ok-Susu ice cream and $3.50 rose topokki snacks at Wang Mart, Henderson. Run, don’t walk.

See Karishma Grebneff in Prayas Theatre’s production of Mama Moo, on at TAPAC from September 21–26. Book tickets at tapac.org.nz
