Barrenjoey has already recruited about 10 of competing broker Jarden’s top staff for its New Zealand operation.
“Barrenjoey New Zealand will be a locally led and managed business, creating a platform that will attract and reward the very best people so they can produce outstanding outcomes for clients,” the firm said at the time.
As it stands, there are five institutional brokers in New Zealand: Jarden, Craigs Investment Partners, Forsyth Barr, Macquarie Group and UBS.
Insiders have questioned whether there is room for six.
Last year, Craigs and TA Associates concluded a strategic partnership.
Initially announced in December 2024, the agreement involved Craigs’ employee and director shareholders retaining 50% ownership of the firm, partnering closely with TA to accelerate Craigs’ growth strategy.
“Since 1984, we’ve built one of New Zealand’s largest investment advisory firms, deeply connected to the communities we serve,” Craigs’ website says.
“We offer expert services across private wealth, corporate, and institutional sectors, with strong international links – including strategic partnerships with Raymond James and JP Morgan Asset Management – to bring global opportunities closer to home,” it said.
