Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes near Whakatāne

An earthquake has rattled the Bay of Plenty this evening.

The magnitude 4.1 quake struck at 6.25pm, about 15km west of Whakatāne, at a depth of 5km. The earthquake details are preliminary.

GeoNet listed the shaking as light, with more than 1700 people reporting they had felt the quake within
minutes.

People across the Bay of Plenty reported a sharp jolt, with windows rattling and household items moving.

In Edgecumbe, one person described a “strong shake” and said their entertainment unit moved.
