Sri Lanka: Dengue cases top 90,000, Syphilis cases up in 2025

Since the beginning of the year, the Sri Lanka National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) of the Ministry of Health reports 90,306 cases though August 10.

The districts of Gampaha and Colombo account for 40 percent of all cases with 19,204 and 17,955 cases, respectively.

65 deaths have been reported, for a case fatality rate of .07%.

Syphilis

In 2025, 508 early syphilis cases were reported among men, and 175 cases among women, according to data from the National STD/AIDS Control Programme.

This represents a sharp increase compared to 2019, when 89 cases were recorded among men and 31 among women.

The figures show that reported cases among men increased by 471% between 2019 and 2025, while cases among women rose by 465% during the same period.
