Whangārei pyrolysis operation faces fresh appeal from regional council

  • August 13, 2026

Zero Waste Aotearoa, a national environmental advocacy organisation focused on waste reduction and resource recovery, has welcomed the council’s decision to challenge the ruling.

In a social media post, the non-profit organisation described the development as “good news” and said it was “really pleased and grateful” that the NRC had decided to take action in the case.

The organisation said New Zealand’s regulatory framework had yet to adequately address emerging technologies such as pyrolysis and repeated its call for a national moratorium on waste incineration.

NRC’s group manager regulatory services Colin Dall confirmed that the council lodged its appeal on August 3.

Black2Green director Warren Sinclair has been approached for comment.

Sarah Curtis is a news reporter for the Northern Advocate, focusing on a wide range of issues. She has nearly 20 years’ experience in journalism, most of which she spent court reporting in Gisborne and on the East Coast.
