Police reminded participants that they will not tolerate illegal, dangerous, intimidating or anti-social behaviour and appropriate enforcement action will be taken where offences are identified.
Police will be present during a large bike ride in South Auckland this weekend.
“Our roads are there for everyone, and all road users should be able to travel safely and without disruption,” Lee said.
“Police encourage all participants to make good decisions, follow the road rules, and help ensure the event is conducted safely for everyone involved.”
Police monitored a mass bike ride on Auckland’s North Shore on August 9 which involved about 40 cyclists.
Waitematā East area commander Inspector Aron McKeown said police maintained a visible presence during the ride and was disappointed at the behaviour of some participants.
“Where offences could be safely addressed at the time, enforcement action was taken,” McKeown said at the time.
“Where this was not possible, police will investigate offending for subsequent enforcement action.”
Infringements for excess speed, multiple helmet offences and other vehicle-related offences were issued at the event, police confirmed.
A similar event last May in West Auckland also attracted a police presence, with 53 infringement notices being issued by police that time.
At the time, police stressed the rides were not illegal and they did not consider the participants to be gang related.
