Shot Scope has brought its GPS, shot tracking, and performance analysis tools to Apple Watch for the first time. The app carries a one-off fee rather than an annual subscription – but is it too expensive or surprisingly good value?

Apple Watch-owning golfers have a new option for GPS and shot tracking after Shot Scope launched its first dedicated app for Apple’s smartwatch.

The launch means golfers can now access the company’s detailed GPS yardages, hole maps, and performance analysis without buying one of Shot Scope’s dedicated watches, while continuing to use the smartwatch they wear every day when out on the course.

It’s a significant move for the Scottish company, which has built its reputation on GPS watches and performance-tracking technology, but the biggest talking point may be its pricing.

Rather than following rivals such as Golfshot, Hole19, and 18Birdies down the subscription route, Shot Scope is charging a one-off £149.99 fee that includes lifetime access to its GPS features and performance platform.

What does the app include?

The Shot Scope Apple Watch app offers far more than basic front, middle, and back yardages.

Users get detailed hole maps with tap-anywhere yardages, dynamic distances to hazards, green contour maps, and automatic shot tracking directly from their wrist.

Every shot is uploaded to Shot Scope’s performance platform, unlocking more than 100 statistics, including Strokes Gained analysis and handicap benchmarking.

The app also serves as a gateway into the wider Shot Scope ecosystem. You gain access to the company’s free mobile app and web dashboard, with features such as MyStrategy, a data-driven course management tool, and Shot Scope 6, which groups more than 100 performance metrics into six key areas to simplify post-round analysis and highlight where shots can be saved.

The app also means you can continue using your Apple Watch’s everyday health and fitness features rather than switching to a dedicated golf device when you head to the course.

Shot Scope G6 Golf WatchExpensive… but good value?

At first glance, paying nearly £150 for an app may seem expensive.

However, Shot Scope has deliberately positioned the app as a one-time purchase, meaning golfers won’t face ongoing subscription costs.

Many rival apps cost between £60-100 a year, which means Shot Scope users will end up saving money in the longer term.

“Our philosophy has always been to make game improvement accessible and transparent,” says Shot Scope CEO David Hunter.

“Many competitors tie golfers into monthly subscription fees that quickly turn their apps into expensive, long-term commitments. By offering lifetime access for a single, one-time payment, we are providing unbeatable value alongside world-class technology.”

The app also stacks up well against Shot Scope’s own hardware. The GPS-only G6 watch has an RRP of £179.99, meaning Apple Watch owners can access Shot Scope’s GPS, shot tracking, and performance analysis for less than the cost of buying a dedicated GPS device.

The Shot Scope Apple Watch app: worth it or not?

Shot Scope’s Apple Watch app won’t be the right choice for every golfer, particularly those simply looking for affordable GPS yardages. With an Apple Watch Series 11 starting at £369, you’re looking at over £500 to buy that and add the Shot Scope app.

But for Apple Watch owners who want a convenient way to access one of golf’s most comprehensive shot-tracking and analytics platforms without wearing a second device or signing up to another recurring subscription, it makes a lot of sense and offers great value.

And for golfers who already have an Apple Watch, the three-round free trial means there’s little reason not to see whether Shot Scope’s data-driven approach can help lower their scores before deciding whether the £149.99 one-off fee is money well spent.
