Pack a good coat because writer-director Andrew Haigh is returning for A Long Winter. The new film from the Lean On Pete director, A Long Winter, won’t premiere until the fall, but Mubi released a few first-look images to give us a taste of the cold amid the dog days of summer. The film stars Fred Hechinger, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Kit Connor, Caitriona Balfe, and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and sees a family preparing for the titular season amid internal conflict. Mubi hasn’t released a more robust logline for the film than that, but the 2025 short story by Colm Tóibín follows a boy named Miquel, who lives in the Pyrenees mountains with his family. As they’re preparing for the cold, his mother abandons the homestead after a fight with her husband. As the family learns to live without her, an orphaned servant boy comes into their care, and Miquel begins to harbor feelings for him. We’ll see if Haigh’s film is a straightforward adaptation of Tóibín when A Long Winter premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival later this year.
